Middlebury
defeated Bowdoin 16-9 in a hard fought game in beautiful weather
in Brunswick,
ME. We just pulled in after a 6 hour
trip (minor bus
trouble), so just
a quick note tonight for anyone who checks this weekend
and is curious
about the score.
We were up 7-4 at
the half and 10-7 after 3 quarters.
They made a couple
runs at us, but we
kept holding them off and getting the lead back. They
were the best team
we have played other than Gettysburg.
They battled us
and their goalie
played extremely well. They beat us up
there two years ago
with the same
goalie, but in that game we pelted him with shots. He made a
bunch of great
saves in this one.
The entire defense
played great. Jed Raymond played great
against their #1
guy at attack who
is a very good attackman. The attack
led the way in
scoring with
Seeley, Herbert and Hopkins all getting multiple goals. Our
4th attackman,
Greg Carroll, also had a huge goal in the 3rd on a strong 1
v. 1 dodge.
Our middies did a
nice job generating offense and running the field. They
also kept their
middies from getting the ball very often.
Three unsung
heroes on this
team are our defensive midfielders, Derek Esposito, Scott
Leach and John
Rice. They play great defense, do a
great job breaking out
upfield to start
transition goals and expend tons of energy denying the
other team's
middies the ball. They are all
excellent on-ball defenders,
but have
sacrificed the "glory" of on-ball defense for the arduous task of
shutting off all
game.
Dave Campbell was
huge in the goal and got some great fast breaks started.
Quite a few of the
goals were fast break/transition goals.
My hat is off to
Bowdoin for how they battled, but it is a proud day to be a
Panther!
St. Lawrence on
Tuesday at home, then Trinity next Saturday.
Best Wishes,
Erin
P.S. Thanks to Jim Taylor and Will Graham who
were both in attendance!
