6-5, not your typical
Middlebury score. While the offense is
still putting things together, it's been nice to have our goalie and defensive
group step up in our first two games.
Of Springfield's 5 goals,
only two came in 6v6 offense. The others
came off of a failed clear, a bad turnover by our offense that led to a one on
o with our goalie, and the other was a breakdown in our man-down unit. The final one resulted in a time and room
shot from about 8 yards. Overall it was
a great effort by our defensive group.
Charlie Schopp has been doing a great job on
ball and doing exactly what we've asked of him.
Matt Rayner is a physical presence at the
defensive end of the field and Henry Clark is getting the hang of playing close
defense for us. At long stick midfield
we've had a great surprise with the play of freshman John Duvnjak
(Manhasset, NY). He's plays with a lot
of heart and is a tough competitor.
We're also getting some
nice contributions from our short stick d-mids,
mainly Matt Virtue and Alex Englert. Matt may be playing the best lacrosse of his
career right now and Alex scored two big goals yesterday in transition.
Offensively we did create
some good looks yesterday but didn't put them away. We also gave away too many possessions with
careless turnovers. We need to sharpen
things up at that end of the field and get on the same page. Once we do that I believe we'll be a good
offensive group. Hopefully that happens
this weekend!
Time to move on to
Wesleyan, they've already lost two games this year and judging from their score
yesterday, they're not too pleased about it.
As always it should be a good one on Saturday.
