I just wanted to send out a
quick update on the team after our Union scrimmage from this past
weekend. Although we weren't keeping score in the scrimmage and we
weren't playing to win (as we subbed liberally throughout the game), I can tell
you after watching the film that we ended up tied at 13.
It's safe to say we came out
of the gate a little flat defensively as we gave up 8 goals in the first
half! After a spirited halftime talk from Coach Ritter to the defense
and middies (I wasn't privy to the entire talk but thought I heard something to
the effect of "if they get to their strong hand one more time we'll just
spend tomorrow's practice crabbin!"), needless
to say we were able to execute the fundamentals of our defense a little
better in the second half.
Unfortunately we've been hit
by the injury bug this season and have been playing without some of our
regulars on both sides of the ball but the good news is that we should have almost everyone back by next
week.
Some guys that have
stood out on the defensive end have been James Guay
who played in a limited role on Friday but has shown that he'll be a top tier
defenseman this year, Frank Granara
at short stick d-middie who has been on the
receiving end of a number of outlet passes from Pete Britt and is playing
good on ball defense, and freshman Alex Giammarco
who has been taking the majority of face offs with Dave Campbell out for
another week or so.
Offensively it looks like
we're going to have some good options and that we're going to have some nice
competition at attack and in the midfield to see the field this
year. We ended the night 5 for 9 on man up and that unit continues to
look like they'll be able to generate great looks. Jim Cabrera, Mike
Stone, and Rory Sanborn all notched two goals each in the midfield while junior
Matt Ferrer, sophomore Pete Smith and Freshman Dave Hild all had a goal at attack. The best performance
of the night was turned in by sophomore midfielder Matt Virtue who finished
with 3 goals. Matt was one of our defensive midfielder's a year ago and
has always been able to run the field well but put in the time this offseason
to be able to step onto the field offensively for us. We're hoping he can
continue to be a productive offensive player as he grows more comfortable in
his new role.
